Ometepe, the promised (is)land
In the middle of Lake Cociboca, in Nicaragua, the island of Ometepe is a biodiversity paradise, a rich and bountiful land. Made of two volcanoes to which it owes its name meaning “the island with two mountains” in Nahuatl, it has been inhabited for several millennia, by people who live of farming and fishing. For around 20 years, ecotourism and its 60,000 annual visitors have given the local economy a new breath.
But, in 2014, the tranquillity of the world’s largest freshwater island was threatened when President Daniel Ortega made a deal with a Chinese billionaire to build a new inter-ocean canal to compete with the Panama Canal. This colossal project (30 billion euros) induced numerous cases of bribery, over 25,000 expropriations and threatens the largest freshwater reserve in Central America. In addition, the concession includes no direct dividend for Nicaragua. Many protests have opposed the projects, which still hovers like a shadow over Ometepe’s environment and inhabitants.

Ometepe, paradis menacé
Au Nicaragua, au milieu du lac Cociboca, l’île d'Ometepe est un paradis pour la biodiversité et une terre riche et fertile. Composée de deux volcans qui lui ont valu le nom d'«île aux deux montagnes », en langue nahuatl, elle attire depuis plusieurs millénaires des habitants qui y pratiquent l'agriculture et la pêche. Depuis une vingtaine d'années, l'écotourisme et ses 60 000 visiteurs annuels ont donné un second souffle à l'économie locale.
La quiétude de la plus grande île en eau douce du monde s'est retrouvée menacée en 2014, lorsque le président Daniel Ortega a conclu un accord avec un milliardaire chinois pour la construction d'un nouveau canal interocéanique, pour concurrencer le canal de Panama. Un projet colossal (30 milliards d'euros) engendrant de nombreux pots de vins, plus de 25 000 expropriations et menaçant la plus importante réserve d'eau douce d'Amérique centrale. Sans compter que la concession ne prévoit aucun dividende direct pour le Nicaragua. De nombreuses manifestations se sont opposées au projet qui, pour l'heure, plane toujours comme une menace sur l'environnement et les habitants d'Ometepe.
