From Ukraine to Berlin

They fled Ukraine and the war with a one-way ticket. Images of Ukrainian civilians hastily leaving their country have gone around the world. In the beginning of march 2022, they arrived at Berlin's central station, after several stops in Poland or the Czech Republic. Many single women with children, elderly people. Very few men of fighting age. And many refugees of various origins, whom the migratory flows brought to Ukraine before the conflict. A swarm of volunteers welcomes them and directs them to the reception centres. Some stay in Berlin, and immediately begin the administrative procedures. The others change platforms and take the road of exodus. In search of family or acquaintances, or simply in search of freedom. Safe from bombings.

Ils ont fui l'Ukraine et la guerre, avec un billet sans retour. Les images des civils ukrainiens quittant leur pays à la hâte ont fait le tour du monde. Début mars 2022, ils arrivent en gare centrale de Berlin, après plusieurs escales en Pologne ou en République Tchèque. Beaucoup de femmes seules avec des enfants, des personnes âgées. Très peu d'hommes en âge de combattre. Parmi eux, aussi, des réfugiés aux origines diverses, que les flux migratoires ont amené en Ukraine avant le conflit. Une nuée de bénévoles les accueille et leur propose de l'aide. Certains réfugiés restent à Berlin, où les attendent les procédures administratives. Les autres changent de quai et reprennent la route de l'exode. A la recherche de famille ou de connaissances, ou tout simplement en quête de liberté. A l'abri des bombes.
